Crew names, Ship Names and TV

Any ideas how to improve the game or the site.

Crew names, Ship Names and TV

Hi everyone, I could use some help scraping wikipedia for character roles and names so that I can make a fan-patch that will let us fly around with the crew of the <your favorite ship>.

To do that one needs data. its here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_S ... characters
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_B ... characters
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_F ... characters

I'm imagining adding a section to the data/crewnames file like so:

cp:James T. Kirk:<x>
sc:Spock:<x>
dr:Bones:<x>
.
.

see what I'm doing there?

first the role that the name as a whole qualifies for, then the name, and then a percentage chance for that name to be chosen. I would leave the percentage blank to have the game pull one of the captain names out of the list at random, or set it to 100 (by hand) to always fly around as one of them. same for all the other roles.

if there was no role in that line, say for 'Draal' from babylon5 or 'Nog' from trek, you would have a chance to run into that person in some sort of role .. without them having a last name.

i'd want to make it so that people from that section of the file would not appear again in the sector after they die.

if one of you guys could help put together such lists for <insert favorite show here> i would put this together and present a patch to magellan so that he can look at it or take it over.

FTW we could also give a generic tv/series 'flavor' to the sector where you can just pick y/n babylon 5 shipnames right now. If we splice codes to the names of the ships from different series then I could look at how to flavour up encounters with those as well. well. maybe. the ships would need to get faction codes too, so initially this would just get you a good looking name for your starting ship, so not all the ship types are actually needed for that list. but it would be cool to have for the game, no matter who does it in the end:

ships in the game: (ls)Light Scout, (lrf)Long Range Fighter, (lt)Light Transport, (tt)Troop Transport, (hs)Heavy Scout, (cr)Cruiser, (ht)Heavy Transport, (dr)Dropship, (ex)Explorer, (de)Destroyer, (me)Merchantman, (tc)Troop Carrier, (he)Heavy Explorer, (bs)Battleship, (am)Armed Merchantman, (hc)Heavy Troop Carrier

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_S ... d_by_class
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babylon_5 (in the table of links at the bottom)

(i'd imagine that named Merchantmen would have better loot or pay more for fuel if you found them stranded; other named ships, if found, could get extra items or so. named ships would also be unique per sector)

(ship-naming could get convoluted fast, alternative sprites are probably out of the question as trademarks would likely make them impossible anyway, but names are facts and one can use them. so if you have names/universe, spill them here)

who knows, maybe one of you as that sort of thing sitting on disk already.

discuss?
