are they useful for anything right now, like salvaging derelicts, stuff like that?
and if they are, how do you do the salvaging?

Well currently no.
The cost to reward ratio is null basically. Some stations don't seem to take derelicts, plus you have to buy 2-3 goddamn tractor beams in order to make it back, as for some reason they're made of paper mache.
Plus derelicts only give 1.5-2k per derelict.
