How do you use drills, and where?

Are they for reaching resources stuck in mountains, or something else?

I can stand next to walls and fire at them, but I can't equip laser drills on my away team. Do they need to be equipped to work or do they work 'automagically'?

Just fire. When you fire at a mountain you're next to, your drills are used instead of your weapons. Also, by drills I mean 'the most powerful drill you possess' - so far number of drills didn't matter when I was drilling, the damage to the mountain equaled to that of the best single one from among all my drills.

Funnily enough, it often makes drills necessary evil on the surface but walls underground, in caves for example, are mined with your gunfire and thus are far less of a problem to any mid-game, decently sized away team which makes long corridor per every single order of firing.
